There's No Place Like Home
If Maslow’s Hierarchy had to summarize its foundation in one word, it would be home.
Cotopaxi’s mission is to create global change. One way they live out their mission is by supporting nonprofits that help communities experiencing poverty.
If you’re one of the 1.6 billion people without safe shelter, the odds of you receiving a donated house are the same odds as you winning the Mega Millions twice.
The housing crisis is growing too quickly for us to rely only on the strategy of building homes and giving them away. It’s just not possible to serve people at scale using that traditional approach. It’s too slow, too expensive, and too limited.
Families should be able to rely on more than luck to secure the housing they need. That’s why we build differently and partner with other impact-driven teams willing to do the same.

“I’m excited and thankful to have generous partners like Cotopaxi who believe in doing things differently to unlock more opportunities for families living in poverty. Their support is helping so many more vulnerable families access the basic human right of adequate housing. I can’t wait to see how this partnership helps us build a more inclusive housing market across Latin America.” — Brett Hagler, CEO and co-founder, New Story
When families can secure housing solutions that work for them at a price they can afford, they experience generational change for good.
“It feels like a dream come true. I am so happy that I have land to my name that I can pass on to my children.” — Griselda, in Etzatlán, Mexico
Right now, 80% of families in Mexico don’t qualify to purchase the average home available in the market. Low-income families need more affordable housing options.
In partnership with New Story, Cotopaxi is playing a role in making housing more accessible for families traditionally left out of the Mexican housing market. Their team is investing in a home design that could reduce the price of the current most affordable home in the market by 20%. The design will also give families the flexibility to expand their homes as their needs and desires change. A new affordable home design will unlock greater housing and economic opportunities for low-income families in Etzatlán and beyond.
“New Story’s commitment to fighting poverty with housing solutions including innovative strategies to create and scale accessible housing markets are both inspiring and exciting, “ said Charlie Clark, director of giving and cause marketing at Cotopaxi. “We hope to play an important role in helping them achieve their goal of reaching 1 million people in Latin America by 2030, and the next million beyond that.”
We’re excited to see how a partnership with Cotopaxi empowers vulnerable families to secure adequate housing, improve their well-being, and fulfill their potential.
